Sustainability is once again a milestone for the Argentine fishing industry: the coastal shrimp fishery in Chubut has obtained the international MSC (Merine Stewardship Council) certification, the most globally recognized standard for sustainable fishing. This historic achievement is the result of almost a decade of joint work between companies in the sector, including CONSERMAR, in which Profand participates, and reinforces the commitment to responsible fishing and sustainable management of marine resources.
The assessment of the fishery was carried out by the International Agricultural Organization (IOA), which confirmed that all the principles of the MSC standard were successfully met: stock status, environmental impact and management system effectiveness. The certification, which will be valid for five years with annual audits, establishes clear conditions for continuous improvement, including the implementation of strategies to minimize impacts on protected species and marine habitats, and effective control of regulatory compliance.
The process had the technical support of CeDePesca and the collaboration of scientific entities such as the Hydrobiology Laboratory of the Universidad de la Patagonia, as well as key public agencies in the province of Chubut. Leading companies in the national fishing sector also participated, demonstrating a solid public-private articulation.
For Profand, this recognition not only represents a validation of the road travelled, but also opens new commercial opportunities in demanding markets such as Germany, Belgium or Holland, which prioritize products from certified fisheries. It is also a strategic step to consolidate a responsible production model that contributes economic, social and environmental value, both in Argentina and internationally.
The certification of the coastal shrimp consolidates Chubut as a benchmark in good fishing practices in the South Atlantic, and Profand as a company committed to the development of sustainable, transparent fishing, aligned with the highest global standards. This achievement reinforces the group's vision for the future, in line with its purpose of offering responsible, traceable and high quality seafood to consumers.
