Profand has been selected in the COCREA call of the Spain's Council Superior of Scientific Research (CSIC) for a project focused on the valorization of waste from the fishing industry.
This project, titled Fish Processing Industry: Towards a Sustainable and Profitable Model (FISHECOSUS), aims to transform fish and shellfish processing by-products into high-value technological and bioactive compounds, with applications in sectors such as functional foods, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
The project aims to develop biodegradable packaging and edible coatings with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.
The fishing industry generates large volumes of waste with low commercial value, resulting in significant environmental and economic cost. The FISHECOSUS project offers a sustainable solution for:
-
- Transform waste and effluents into high-value biological compounds.
- Asses the industrial feasibility of the processes and evaluate the profitability of the resulting compounds.
- Develop active edible coatings that extend food freshness, enhance food safety and reduce waste.
The initiative promotes more efficient resource management, fosters sustainability, and develops innovative solutions that benefit both industry and consumers. This approach addresses the current demands for food safety, waste reduction and environmental responsibility, positioning Profand as a leader in sustainable innovation.
Collaboration with the multinational Profand is crucial to achieving the project's objectives. At Profand weare committed to sustainability with a zero-waste approach, as well as the implementation of biodegradable single-use packaging by 2030. Our partnership plays a vital rolein driving the success of this initiative.
Additionally, the project places special emphasis on edible coatings, which, when applied directly to food, create a natural barrier that inhibits the proliferation of microorganisms and delays oxidation, ensuring enhanced freshness and food safety.
The CSIC COCREA program aims to promote public-private collaboration through the developing open innovation projects focus on co-creation and co-development between CSIC and companies, with the goal of addressing global challenges.
